Sigma Draconis Ascendancy
In another galaxy, the Sigma Draconis are a race of long-lived shapeshifting dragons. They have ruled the nearby areas of their galaxy for eons, expanding by travelling by instantaneous teleportation portals to conquer new races and carve out new territories. But a million years ago, a plague swept through and killed many of their females. Some humanoid species on nearby planets were found to be compatible, setting off a civil war between racial purists and those fighting against extinction. The purists lost and left to find a new galaxy (Milky Way) and founded Muspelheim (in the Gods Among Us universe stories).
The survivors stayed in their home galaxy, interbreeding with other species until only the royals retained enough original genetics to fully shapeshift into dragon form, living tens of thousands of years. Golden-eyed elites can partially shapeshift with the ability to create dragonscale and live several thousand years. Silver-eyed draconis have rapid healing and long lives (up to 1,000). Most humanoids within control of the Sigma Draconis Ascendancy live up to 300 years, thanks to advances in medicine and nutrition. But with the loss of full shapeshifting causing the inability to bite and bind mates, draconis scientists released a version of the polydnavirus that unexpectedly bonded with most races and created skin-contact mate bonds between individuals of compatible genetics. Unexpected side effects developed into an energetic dimensional bond that means soulmated individuals are unable to be parted from each other. Except for the royals, draconis no longer experience heats. The nanites produced within the blood are bonded to draconis genetics, passed down to offspring, and are responsible for fast healing, long lives and degree of shapeshifting.
